Indonesian Government Demands Enhanced Content Moderation from Meta and TikTok
Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) has summoned representatives from Meta Platforms—parent company of Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram—and TikTok to address the proliferation of disinformation on their platforms. The MOVE follows public protests triggered by false narratives circulating on social media, with Komdigi identifying TikTok and Instagram as primary vectors for harmful content.
Deputy Minister Angga Raka Prabowo warned of escalating penalties, including fines, suspensions, or outright bans, should the platforms fail to strengthen moderation. "The impact of disinformation is chaos," Angga stated, emphasizing the government's mandate to safeguard national stability. The crackdown reflects growing scrutiny of social media's role in news dissemination amid rising geopolitical tensions in Southeast Asia.
